About Yankee Doodle Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Yankee Doodle’
Breeder: Father John Fiala | Introduced: 1985 | Type: Common Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
💜 Deep, dark purple and intensely fragrant—Yankee Doodle is an American-bred lilac with some of the richest purple flowers you'll find.
Yankee Doodle is a standout among purple lilacs, producing large clusters of deep, saturated purple flowers in mid-spring. The individual florets are large and single, allowing the flowers' rich color to take center stage.
And the fragrance is just as impressive. Yankee Doodle has that wonderfully strong, nostalgic lilac perfume that begs you to cut an armful of stems and bring them inside.

🇺🇸 An All-American Lilac
Yankee Doodle was introduced in 1985 by Father John Fiala, an American priest, horticulturist, author and one of the most important lilac breeders of the 20th century.
Fiala created Yankee Doodle from a cross between ‘Prodige’ and ‘Rochester’, ultimately selecting it for its exceptional depth of color. The International Lilac Society has described it as the darkest of Father Fiala's lilacs.
And that's really what sets Yankee Doodle apart.
Where many purple lilacs soften toward lavender as the flowers open, Yankee Doodle is prized for its rich, dark purple presence. Planted beside white, blush-pink or pale-blue lilacs, the contrast can be spectacular.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
If you're going to plant a purple lilac, why not make it really purple?
Yankee Doodle gives us the saturated color we love without sacrificing the things that make lilacs so special: incredible spring fragrance, generous flower clusters and stems begging to be cut for the house.
It's also wonderfully cold hardy to Zone 3, making it a true workhorse for northern gardens.
Plant it beside Beauty of Moscow for a dramatic dark-purple-and-pearly-white combination, or pair it with President Lincoln to highlight the difference between true deep purple and lavender blue.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Yankee Doodle in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the heaviest flowering and helps develop a strong, dense shrub.
Give it room to mature to approximately 8 feet tall and wide. It works beautifully as a specimen, but several plants can also create an incredible fragrant flowering screen or hedge.
If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs develop the following year's flower buds after their spring bloom, so pruning later can remove next year's flowers.
And when it blooms, cut generously. Few things smell more like spring than a vase overflowing with freshly cut lilacs.
