About Saugeana Chinese Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa × chinensis ‘Saugeana’
Also Known As: Rouen Lilac | Type: Hybrid Chinese Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🌸 Graceful, arching and absolutely covered in reddish-purple flowers—Saugeana is an old French lilac with a surprisingly misleading name.
Saugeana Chinese Lilac produces an extraordinary spring display of reddish-purple to rosy-lilac single flowers carried in abundant, fragrant clusters along gracefully arching branches.
Compared with traditional Common Lilacs, its foliage is smaller and finer textured, giving the entire shrub a softer, more graceful appearance.
And when it blooms?
Those arching stems can become absolutely loaded with flowers.

🇫🇷 The “Chinese” Lilac That's Actually French
Here's the fun part.
Despite its name, Chinese Lilac isn't actually from China.
Syringa × chinensis is an old hybrid between Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and Persian Lilac, believed to have originated in Rouen, France, in the late 1700s.
That's why you'll also see it called Rouen Lilac.
‘Saugeana’ is an especially old selection of this hybrid, reportedly dating to the early 1800s and named for the French nurseryman Saugé.
Its flowers were selected for being darker and redder than the original Rouen Lilac, giving Saugeana its distinctive rich coloring.
So despite the name on the plant tag, you're actually planting a little piece of old French horticultural history.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
It's the habit that makes this lilac different.
Many of our classic French lilacs grow into substantial, fairly upright shrubs.
Saugeana is softer.
Its finer foliage and long, arching flowering branches give it a wonderfully romantic quality when it's allowed to grow naturally.
It's particularly beautiful planted as an informal flowering hedge, where several plants can develop into a sweeping mass of fragrant reddish-purple flowers.
And there's another nice bonus: Chinese lilacs tend to show less susceptibility to powdery mildew than Common Lilac, helping the foliage stay attractive later into the season.
This is the lilac we'd plant when we want something to look a little less formal—and a little more like it has always belonged there.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Saugeana in full sun and moist but well-drained soil. It adapts to a range of soil types and is remarkably cold hardy once established.
Give it room to develop its naturally broad, arching shape. Rather than repeatedly shearing it into a tight hedge, allow those flowering branches to develop—that graceful habit is one of the plant's best features.
If pruning is necessary, prune immediately after flowering. Like other lilacs, Saugeana develops its next crop of flower buds on older growth.
For an informal flowering hedge, space plants generously and let them grow together naturally.
