About Robe d’Or Potted Rose Bush
Rose Robe d’Or — Japanese Garden Rose
🧬 Breeder: Junko Kawamoto, Kawamoto Rose Garden (Japan)
🌹 Introduced: 2018
✨ An extraordinary Japanese rose dressed in antique beige and gold, with touches of pale lavender hidden at its heart.
Robe d’Or is one of those rare roses whose color seems almost impossible to describe with a single word. Its romantic, medium-sized flowers open in sophisticated shades of antique beige, softly illuminated with golden tones, while hints of pale lavender-purple peek through near the center of the bloom.
The flowers have an elegant cupped form and often nod slightly as they open, giving the plant a graceful, almost wistful appearance. A delicate fragrance combines Tea notes with touches of powder and fresh green, complementing the rose's refined coloring without overpowering it.
Bred in Japan by celebrated rose breeder Junko Kawamoto, Robe d’Or blooms repeatedly throughout the season on a vigorous shrub reaching approximately 4–5 feet tall.

✨ What's in a Name?
Robe d’Or translates from French as “dress of gold” or “golden gown.”
The Japanese description of the variety explains the name as a rose that appears to be “wearing gold.”
And once you see the flowers, the inspiration makes perfect sense.
Its petals aren't a traditional bright yellow or gold. Instead, they have a sophisticated beige foundation delicately washed with golden color, while pale lavender appears unexpectedly toward the center.
The effect is less like a brightly colored flower and more like layers of antique silk—subtle, elegant, and constantly changing depending on the light.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is a collector's color.
Robe d’Or doesn't fit neatly into the traditional rose palette, and that's exactly why we love it. The combination of beige, gold, and pale lavender gives the flowers an almost vintage, couture quality.
We especially love the way the blooms nod slightly from the stems. Rather than looking rigid or formal, they have a relaxed elegance that feels quintessentially Japanese.
Add its repeat flowering, vigorous growth, good flower longevity, and unusual Tea-powder-green fragrance, and Robe d’Or becomes the kind of rose that makes even an experienced rose collector stop and ask:
“What rose is that?”
🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations
Garden Placement: Robe d’Or can be grown in the ground or in a suitably sized container.
Training: Its spreading shrub habit also lends itself to training on an obelisk or trellis, giving gardeners flexibility in how they display it.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently while the plant becomes established, allowing the soil to drain well between waterings.
Pruning: Shape as needed while preserving enough healthy growth to support its naturally graceful, spreading form.
Disease Management: Disease resistance is considered average, so provide good air circulation and monitor for common rose diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew.
Warm-Climate Gardens: Robe d’Or has particularly good heat tolerance, making it an intriguing choice for gardeners dealing with warmer summer conditions.
