About Pocahontas Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa × hyacinthiflora ‘Pocahontas’
Breeder: Frank L. Skinner | Introduced: 1935 | Type: Early-Flowering Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
💜 Maroon-purple buds. Deep violet flowers. Incredible fragrance—and it starts the lilac show early.
Pocahontas is a spectacular early-flowering lilac that begins with deep maroon-purple buds opening into masses of rich violet, single flowers.
The contrast between those dark buds and open flowers gives the shrub extraordinary depth when both are present at once. And because Pocahontas flowers before most traditional French lilacs, it's an excellent way to extend lilac season from the very beginning.
Add wonderful fragrance, exceptional cold hardiness and vigorous growth, and it's easy to see why this 1935 introduction remains a lilac classic.

🇨🇦 Bred Where Winter Means Business
Pocahontas was introduced in 1935 by Frank L. Skinner, one of Canada's great cold-climate plant breeders.
Skinner operated his nursery in Dropmore, Manitoba, where winter temperatures provided a rather unforgiving test for anything claiming to be cold hardy.
His goal was to develop beautiful ornamental plants capable of thriving in the extreme climate of the Canadian prairies.
Pocahontas was one of his successes.
It's part of the Syringa × hyacinthiflora group, early-flowering hybrids with Common Lilac in their ancestry. These lilacs combine beautiful flowers and fragrance with exceptional vigor, cold tolerance and an earlier bloom season.
Pocahontas became one of Skinner's enduring introductions and remains prized nearly a century later.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
The color starts before the flowers even open.
Those dark maroon-purple buds are gorgeous on their own. Then they begin opening into deep violet flowers, and suddenly the shrub is covered in layers of burgundy, purple and violet.
But the real reason we'd plant Pocahontas is timing.
Pair it with later French lilacs and instead of getting one enormous burst of flowers, you can stretch lilac season over several weeks.
Plant Pocahontas and Mount Baker to begin the season in deep violet and snowy white, then let the French lilacs take over.
That's how you build a lilac garden rather than simply plant a lilac.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Pocahontas in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Good sunlight encourages the heaviest flowering and strongest growth.
Give this one some room. Pocahontas is a vigorous lilac capable of developing into a substantial 10–12-foot shrub.
Its Syringa × hyacinthiflora heritage also makes it particularly useful in colder gardens where winter hardiness is a priority.
If pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. Pocahontas blooms on old wood, so pruning later in the season can remove the flower buds developing for the following spring.
