About Nippon Beauty Peony Bulbs
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Nippon Beauty’
Breeder: Edward Auten | Introduced: 1927 | Origin: Illinois, USA | Type: Japanese-Form Herbaceous Peony | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
❤️ Deep red petals, a feathery crimson center and just a touch of gold—Nippon Beauty is nearly 100 years old and still knows how to steal the show.
Nippon Beauty produces striking deep red Japanese-form flowers unlike the traditional fluffy double peonies most of us know.
A broad circle of rich crimson-red guard petals surrounds an extraordinary center filled with narrow, feathery red petaloids delicately edged and tipped in golden yellow.
The result is bold, architectural and beautifully unexpected.

❤️ An Award-Winning American Heirloom
Nippon Beauty was introduced in 1927 by American peony breeder Edward Auten of Illinois, a breeder particularly celebrated for his work with Japanese-form peonies.
And this one stood out almost immediately.
Before its introduction, Nippon Beauty won a special $100 prize offered by Brand Peony Farms for an exceptional new Japanese-form peony worthy of introduction.
One hundred dollars in the 1920s was serious prize money.
The flower was praised for its remarkably clear red coloring. Even the outer petals, central petaloids and carpel tips carry essentially the same rich shade of red, while touches of yellow-gold along the petaloid tips create just enough contrast.
🌸 What Is a Japanese-Form Peony?
Nippon Beauty is a wonderful example of why we love offering different peony flower forms.
Instead of filling the entire center with broad petals like a traditional double peony, Japanese-form peonies surround their reproductive center with transformed stamens called staminodes.
On Nippon Beauty, those narrow staminodes become an extraordinary feathery red center with little flashes of gold.
And because the flowers aren't as densely packed as enormous doubles, they have a lighter, more graceful presence on the plant.
It's a completely different way to experience a peony.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is a collector's peony.
At first glance, you see a gorgeous red flower.
Then you get closer.
That's when you notice the little golden edges.
The curled tips.
The feathery center.
The layers of texture hidden inside what initially looked like one solid crimson bloom.
We'd plant Nippon Beauty alongside Krinkled White for an incredible contrast of red and white single-style flowers—or pair it with Do Tell to showcase two completely different interpretations of the Japanese peony form.
And then we'd add a few big doubles nearby.
Because the best cutting gardens aren't filled with flowers that all look alike.
They're filled with flowers you can't stop looking at.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. In warmer climates, some protection from intense afternoon sun can help preserve the flowers.
Position the root so the eyes sit only about 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Planting too deeply is one of the most common reasons otherwise healthy peonies fail to bloom.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting. Keep newly planted roots evenly moist while establishing without allowing the soil to become waterlogged.
Peonies can take a season or two to settle into the garden, but patience pays off.
Once established, Nippon Beauty can become a long-lived garden heirloom—returning with increasingly impressive displays for decades.
