About Morden Centennial Bare Root Rose Bush
Rosa ‘Morden Centennial’
Breeder: Henry H. Marshall / Agriculture Canada | Type: Parkland Shrub Rose | Introduced: 1980 | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🇨🇦 Big, peony-like pink flowers on a rose bred to handle a Canadian winter—Morden Centennial is beautiful, tough, and historically important.
Morden Centennial produces clusters of full, medium-pink flowers against glossy, dark-green foliage. The approximately 3-inch blooms contain around 40 petals, giving them a lush, almost peony-like appearance that's surprisingly romantic for such a rugged shrub rose.
And rugged it is. Developed at Canada's Morden Research Station in Manitoba, Morden Centennial was bred specifically for cold-climate gardens. It flowers repeatedly throughout the growing season, with especially heavy flushes in early summer and again in late summer into fall.

🇨🇦 A Rose 100 Years in the Making
The name Morden Centennial isn't just marketing.
The rose was introduced in 1980 to commemorate the centennial of Morden, Manitoba, home of Canada's renowned Morden Research Station and its influential Parkland rose-breeding program.
Its pedigree helps explain its toughness. Morden Centennial was created from ‘Prairie Princess’ crossed with a hardy seedling descended from ‘White Bouquet’, ‘Assiniboine’ and Rosa arkansana—a native prairie rose valued for its ability to withstand bitter winters.
Morden Centennial eventually became such an important landscape rose that in 1996 it received The Outstanding Cultivar Award from the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science, recognizing its significant contribution to horticulture.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Morden Centennial proves cold-hardy roses don't have to look like survival plants.
Those big, densely petaled pink flowers have the romantic appearance of a much fussier rose, yet they're produced on a shrub bred specifically to survive harsh prairie conditions.
We especially love this rose for northern gardeners who have been told their winters are simply too cold for beautiful roses.
Morden Centennial would beg to differ.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Morden Centennial in full sun and well-drained soil. Water deeply while your bare-root rose establishes, particularly during its first growing season.
Deadheading after the first major flush can encourage faster rebloom. Later in the season, leave some spent flowers in place if you'd like the plant to develop decorative rose hips.
Because Morden Centennial flowers on both old and new wood, even winter dieback doesn't necessarily mean losing the season's flowers. Remove dead or damaged wood in spring and allow its vigorous new growth to take over.
