About First Editions® White Diamonds® Panicle Hydrangea Bare Root Hydrangea Bush
Hydrangea paniculata ‘HYPMAD I’ PP19,082
Brand: First Editions® | Type: Panicle Hydrangea | Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–8
💎 Glistening white flowers, beautifully upright stems and just enough pink as summer fades—White Diamonds® brings an effortless elegance to the garden.
First Editions® White Diamonds® is a beautifully proportioned panicle hydrangea covered in open, airy panicles of crisp white flowers held proudly above rich, dark-green foliage.
As summer begins slipping toward fall, those brilliant white blooms gradually soften to parchment and blush pink, giving the shrub an entirely new look without producing a single new flower.
And at approximately 4–6 feet tall, White Diamonds® is big enough to make an impact without completely taking over the garden.

💎 Why White Diamonds® Is Different
Not every panicle hydrangea needs an enormous, densely packed flower head.
White Diamonds® has a more open, graceful flower structure, giving the blooms an airy quality that feels especially beautiful in a romantic garden.
Those flowers are also held upright.
Instead of enormous panicles pulling the stems toward the ground, White Diamonds® creates a beautifully structured shrub topped with bright white flowers.
And underneath those flowers is another important feature:
thick, leathery, dark-green foliage.
White Diamonds® was selected in part for foliage that provides increased tolerance to summer heat and periods of drought once established.
That combination of flowers and durability makes it much more than another pretty hydrangea.
🤍 White → Parchment → Pink
White Diamonds® begins its show with glistening white panicles.
As the flowers mature, the color gradually softens.
Bright white becomes creamy parchment.
Then, as cooler temperatures arrive, touches of soft antique pink begin appearing in the flowers.
That natural aging process makes White Diamonds® particularly beautiful late in the season, when the garden begins transitioning from summer into fall.
And those mature flowers?
Don't throw them away.
They're gorgeous dried.
✂️ Made for the Cutting Garden
White Diamonds® is officially recognized by First Editions® as a hydrangea that's good for cut flowers, and we completely understand why.
Its open panicles give arrangements a looser, more garden-gathered feeling than the enormous dense heads of some other panicle hydrangeas.
Cut them white for fresh summer arrangements.
Wait until they develop their parchment and pink coloring for late-summer bouquets.
Or allow the flowers to mature further before cutting them for dried arrangements that can last well beyond the growing season.
One shrub. Three completely different looks for the vase.
🌿 A Hydrangea That Blooms on New Wood
Here's one of the biggest differences between White Diamonds® and the Oakleaf Hydrangeas in our collection:
White Diamonds® blooms on new wood.
That means its flower buds develop on the new stems it produces in spring.
So unlike an Oakleaf Hydrangea, you don't have to worry that an early-spring pruning will accidentally remove the coming summer's flowers.
If pruning is needed, late winter or early spring is the time to do it.
Once growth begins, those fresh new stems will produce the flowers for the coming season.
That makes panicle hydrangeas some of the most dependable flowering hydrangeas for colder climates.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
White Diamonds® feels like it was made to live behind a bed of roses.
It has enough size to create structure.
The dark foliage creates a beautiful backdrop.
The white flowers work with practically every rose color imaginable.
And then, just as the garden starts shifting toward fall, those flowers begin taking on their soft parchment and pink tones.
We'd pair it with blush, apricot and lavender roses for an especially romantic combination.
But we might love it even more in the cutting garden.
Because a hydrangea that gives us white summer flowers, antique-pink fall flowers and dried winter arrangements earns its space around here.
🌿 Planting Your Bare Root White Diamonds® Hydrangea
Your bare root hydrangea may look fairly simple when it arrives.
That's exactly what we'd expect.
You're receiving the foundation of the future shrub—the roots and dormant framework that will produce all that new growth.
Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots naturally without bending or circling them.
Position the plant at approximately the same depth it was previously growing, backfill around the roots and water thoroughly to settle the soil.
White Diamonds® performs best in well-drained soil with consistent moisture, particularly during establishment.
Apply a layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the stems.
☀️ Sun or Shade?
White Diamonds® grows in full sun to partial shade.
In cooler climates, plenty of sunshine encourages strong growth and abundant flowering.
In warmer climates, some afternoon protection can be helpful, particularly during periods of intense summer heat.
Once established, White Diamonds® has better heat and drought tolerance than its delicate-looking flowers might suggest—but even drought-tolerant hydrangeas will perform best when they're not repeatedly allowed to become severely dry.
✂️ How to Prune White Diamonds®
This one's easy.
Because White Diamonds® flowers on new wood, prune in late winter or early spring before vigorous new growth begins.
Remove dead or damaged branches first.
Then, if desired, shorten the remaining stems to maintain a dense, well-branched shrub and encourage strong new flowering growth.
First Editions® recommends cutting established plants back by approximately one-third in spring.
Then put away the pruners.
The new growth does the rest.
