About Donald Wyman Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa × prestoniae ‘Donald Wyman’
Breeder: Frank L. Skinner | Type: Preston Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🌸 When the French lilacs are finishing, Donald Wyman is just getting started.
Donald Wyman is a wonderfully cold-hardy Preston lilac prized for its rich red-purple to deep pink flowers and distinctly late bloom season.
Deep purple-red buds open into large pyramidal clusters of single flowers, creating an impressive display on a vigorous, upright shrub. And because it typically flowers two to three weeks later than Common Lilacs, Donald Wyman helps keep lilac season going well after many traditional varieties have finished.

🇨🇦 A Lilac with Two Great Horticultural Names
Donald Wyman belongs to the group of lilacs known as Preston lilacs, named for pioneering Canadian plant breeder Isabella Preston.
Preston created the original Syringa × prestoniae hybrids in Ottawa in the early 20th century by crossing two exceptionally hardy lilac species. The resulting plants were vigorous, cold tolerant and—most importantly for lilac lovers—later flowering than Common Lilacs.
This particular selection was developed by another legendary Canadian plantsman, Frank L. Skinner of Dropmore, Manitoba, and named for influential American horticulturist Dr. Donald Wyman.
Wyman spent more than three decades as horticulturist at Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum and became one of America's best-known authorities on woody landscape plants.
That's quite a horticultural family tree for one lilac.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Donald Wyman helps solve one of our biggest complaints about lilacs: the season is never long enough.
Instead of planting every lilac to bloom at once, we love mixing early, midseason and late varieties.
Start with Mount Baker and Pocahontas.
Let the great French and Common Lilacs take over in midseason.
Then Donald Wyman arrives with another round of rich color.
Suddenly, instead of owning a few lilacs, you've created an entire lilac season.
We also love Preston lilacs for northern gardens. They're exceptionally cold hardy, vigorous and tend to maintain attractive foliage through summer.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Donald Wyman in full sun and well-drained soil. It is extremely cold hardy and particularly well suited to northern gardens.
Preston lilacs have elongated foliage that generally shows better resistance to powdery mildew than traditional Common Lilacs, making them valuable landscape shrubs even after flowering has finished.
Give Donald Wyman room to develop into its naturally substantial, upright form. It makes an excellent flowering screen or informal hedge.
If pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. Like other lilacs, Donald Wyman develops the following year's flower buds on older growth.
