About Common White Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris — Common White Lilac
Type: Heirloom Flowering Shrub | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🤍 Pure white flowers. Incredible lilac perfume. The kind of old-fashioned shrub that makes a garden feel like it's always been there.
Common White Lilac is the timeless white counterpart to the classic purple lilac, producing generous clusters of creamy buds that open into fragrant white flowers each spring.
This is a substantial, traditional lilac that grows into a large, multi-stemmed shrub with heart-shaped green foliage. Give it room and time, and Common White can become one of those magnificent old garden plants that returns every spring with armloads of flowers for the house.

🤍 An Old-Fashioned Garden Classic
There's something wonderfully simple about Common White Lilac.
No unusual striping. No complicated color progression. No trendy flower form.
Just big clusters of white flowers and that unforgettable lilac perfume.
White lilacs have been treasured in gardens for generations, especially around old homes and farmsteads where established shrubs can live for decades. Against their deep-green foliage, the bright white flowers have an almost luminous quality—especially in the softer light of morning and evening.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Common White Lilac feels like it has always belonged in the garden.
We love it planted alone, but we might love it even more paired with Common Purple. Plant the two together and you get that quintessential spring combination of purple and white flowers—with enough fragrance to perfume the entire garden.
And because this is a big, old-fashioned lilac, we say embrace it.
Give it space. Let it grow.
Then every spring, cut an armful and bring them inside.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Common White Lilac in full sun and well-drained soil. Full sun encourages heavier flowering, while good drainage helps keep the plant healthy and vigorous.
Give it enough space to mature into a substantial shrub. Common lilacs naturally form multi-stemmed plants and may gradually spread through suckering, which is wonderful for creating an informal flowering hedge or privacy screen.
If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs develop the following year's flower buds after their spring display, so pruning later can remove next year's flowers.
Older shrubs can be rejuvenated gradually by removing a few of the oldest stems at ground level after flowering and allowing younger shoots to replace them.
