About Common Purple Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris — Common Purple Lilac
Type: Heirloom Flowering Shrub | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
💜 The lilac that smells like spring, childhood gardens, and armloads of flowers on the kitchen table.
Common Purple Lilac is the timeless lilac generations of gardeners have grown and loved. Each spring, the large, vigorous shrub fills with clusters of classic lilac-purple flowers carrying that unmistakably rich, sweet fragrance.
This isn't a petite modern lilac. Common Purple grows into a substantial, long-lived shrub, developing multiple stems and an old-fashioned presence that feels perfectly at home along a fence, at the edge of a property, or beside an old farmhouse.

💜 The Lilac Before All the Fancy Lilacs
Before Beauty of Moscow, President Lincoln, Yankee Doodle and hundreds of other named cultivars, there was Syringa vulgaris.
Native to southeastern Europe, Common Lilac has been grown in gardens for centuries and eventually became one of the great foundation plants of lilac breeding. Its flowers aren't complicated—and that's part of their charm.
Purple flowers. Heart-shaped leaves. Incredible perfume.
It's the lilac many of us picture when someone simply says, “lilac.”
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Some plants don't need improving.
Common Purple Lilac is nostalgia you can plant.
We love the newer compact lilacs and extraordinary collector varieties, but there's something special about an enormous old lilac absolutely covered in purple flowers every spring.
Give it room. Let it become a real shrub. And when it blooms, don't be stingy with the clippers.
Cut an armful.
That's exactly what this lilac is for.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Common Purple Lilac in full sun and well-drained soil. Lilacs appreciate cold winters and perform particularly well in northern climates where they receive the winter chill needed for strong spring flowering.
Give this one room to mature. Common Purple naturally develops into a large, multi-stemmed shrub and can spread gradually through suckering.
If pruning is necessary, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs develop the following year's flower buds after their spring display, so late-season pruning can remove next year's flowers.
Older shrubs can also be rejuvenated gradually by removing a few of the oldest stems at ground level after flowering, allowing vigorous younger stems to take their place.
