About Charles Joly Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Charles Joly’
Breeder: Victor Lemoine | Introduced: 1896 | Type: French Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🍷 Deep wine-purple, intensely fragrant, and beautifully double—Charles Joly has been bringing a little French drama to gardens for more than 125 years.
Charles Joly is a spectacular heirloom French lilac with dark purple buds that open into rich reddish-magenta to wine-purple double flowers. The densely petaled blooms appear in upright clusters in mid- to late spring, filling the garden with classic lilac perfume.
Its unusually warm coloring gives Charles Joly a completely different presence from blue-purple lilacs. Depending on the light and stage of bloom, the flowers can appear crimson-violet, magenta, plum or deep wine red.

🇫🇷 A Classic French Lilac
Charles Joly was introduced in 1896 by Victor Lemoine of Nancy, France, one of the most important ornamental plant breeders in horticultural history.
Lemoine transformed lilac breeding, developing varieties with richer colors and increasingly elaborate double flowers. Charles Joly became one of his enduring classics and is still grown more than a century later.
Its color is particularly special. The flowers are often described as one of the reddest of the classic French lilacs, with deep purple buds opening into warmer reddish-purple and magenta tones.
And because the petals can show a slightly lighter reverse as they curl, mature flower clusters develop even more depth.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Charles Joly is what happens when a classic purple lilac puts on a little French lipstick.
We love the rich wine-magenta color, but those double flowers make it even more special. Each cluster feels fuller and more luxurious than a traditional single-flowered lilac.
And then there's the fragrance.
Plant Charles Joly with Beauty of Moscow for a gorgeous combination of wine-purple and pearly white, or contrast it with the cool lavender-blue flowers of President Lincoln.
But whatever you do, cut some stems.
A vase filled with Charles Joly is basically spring—with a French accent.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Charles Joly in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Give it enough room to mature into a substantial shrub and water deeply while your bare-root lilac becomes established.
Charles Joly may gradually sucker as it matures, creating a fuller traditional lilac clump. These shoots can be allowed to develop for a larger flowering screen or selectively removed to maintain a more defined specimen.
If pruning is necessary, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs bloom on old wood and begin developing the following year's flower buds after their spring display.
