About Albert F. Holden Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Albert F. Holden’
Breeder: Father John Fiala | Introduced: 1981 | Type: Common Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
💜 Deep violet on the front, silvery lilac on the back—Albert F. Holden is a fragrant heirloom lilac that seems to shimmer in the spring garden.
Albert F. Holden produces large panicles of deep violet-purple flowers with a contrasting silvery-lilac reverse. As each petal gently curls forward, the lighter underside becomes visible, creating a beautiful two-tone effect that makes the flowers appear almost silver-edged.
Add a rich lilac fragrance and dark-green, heart-shaped foliage, and this becomes one of those spring shrubs you'll want to see—and smell—up close.

💜 The Lilac That Shimmers
Albert F. Holden was introduced in 1981 by Father John Fiala, one of America's most influential lilac breeders and the author of the definitive book Lilacs: The Genus Syringa.
Fiala bred and named this exceptional lilac in honor of Albert Fairchild Holden, the mining engineer, philanthropist and passionate plantsman whose family established The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio.
And the flower Fiala selected to carry Holden's name is anything but ordinary.
Each blossom is deep violet on the face with a much lighter silvery reverse. As thousands of petals curl and move in the breeze, flashes of silver appear throughout the purple flower clusters.
It's subtle from a distance.
Up close, it's spectacular.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Albert F. Holden gives purple lilacs another dimension.
We love deeply colored lilacs like Yankee Doodle, but this one does something completely different. The silver reverse catches your eye and keeps you looking, especially when sunlight hits an established shrub covered in flowers.
It's also wonderfully fragrant, exceptionally cold hardy, and has a fascinating connection to one of America's great lilac breeders and botanical institutions.
Plant it beside Beauty of Moscow for a sophisticated combination of silvery violet and pearly white, or contrast it with President Lincoln's lavender-blue flowers.
And definitely cut a few stems.
Those two-toned flowers are even prettier when you can study them up close.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Albert F. Holden in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Give it room to mature into a substantial shrub and water deeply while your bare-root lilac establishes.
If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Like other common lilacs, Albert F. Holden flowers on old wood and begins forming the following year's flower buds after its spring display.
As the shrub matures, selectively removing a few older stems at ground level after flowering can encourage vigorous younger growth while maintaining its naturally upright, rounded form.
